Hearts Unstoppable: How We as Females with Special Needs at UEW Turn Every Challenge into Special Powers

Every single day right here at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), a special kind of magic takes place. And do you know who is creating that magic? We are. If you take a quiet walk around our campus pathways, you will see thousands of students carrying heavy bags, chatting about their homework, and rushing to their next class. But among everyone walking those paths, our group of young women is teaching the whole university how to be truly brave. We are female students with special needs, and this is our story.

Some of us learn through our fingers by reading raised dots on paper called Braille. Some of us speak using the quick movement of our fingers in sign language. Others walk at a steady, peaceful pace, or use clever tools to help our bodies move through the day. We do not let anything slow us down. We study hard, build wonderful friendships, fall in love, and show the world every day that having special needs simply means having special strength.

Sometimes, people who do not understand make a silly mistake. They look at us and think that because a girl has special needs, she does not care about making friends, going on fun dates, or falling in love. But we know that is not true at all. Every single heart wants the exact same happy things: to hold hands with someone who genuinely cares, to laugh until our tummies hurt at a funny joke, and to have a faithful friend to sit with after a long day of lectures.

For us as young women with special needs on campus, finding love and making true friends can sometimes feel like climbing a high hill. Sometimes, people look at us with pity, thinking we only need help like little children. We are changing that story completely. We show everyone that we make wonderful, caring, and equal partners in any relationship.

We enjoy walking side-by-side with our sweethearts to the library. We love sharing snacks in our hostel rooms, telling secrets, and comforting our friends when times get tough. When one of us finds a loving partner or a best friend, it proves a beautiful lesson to our whole campus: real love does not care about what your body needs to get through the day. Real love only cares about the goodness inside your heart.

Going to university takes a lot of hard work, but we tackle every single lesson with big, bright smiles. When a textbook has no pictures or plain letters, we use smart computers that speak the words out loud into our ears. When a lecturer speaks in a big hall, we watch sign language helpers who turn every spoken word into moving hands. When a pathway is tricky, we plan our route carefully and move forward step by step, often with a smiling friend right by our side.

We never give up. When we raise our hands in class to answer a hard question, the whole lecture hall stops to listen. We bring brilliant ideas to class because living with special needs teaches us how to be creative problem-solvers every single day.

None of us has to walk this university journey all by ourselves. That is why our Association of Students with Special Needs (ASSN) at UEW is such a wonderful gift to all of us. ASSN is our big, welcoming family where every single one of us belongs.

When a new girl with special needs arrives at UEW, our older ASSN members give her a warm welcome. We show her around the campus, help her settle in, and teach her how to stand tall with confidence. ASSN reminds every single one of us that we are smart, pretty, and deeply valuable. It gives us a safe place to share our biggest dreams and happiest stories. ASSN also speaks up to school leaders to make sure that learning materials and campus spaces work well for every student. Inside ASSN, we know we are part of a team. We hold hands, lift each other up, and shine together like a sky full of stars.

Our story as female students with special needs at the University of Education, Winneba, is not a sad story. It is our story of total joy and big victories.

To any young girl out there who feels different, or who thinks her special needs might hold her back: look at us at UEW. Having special needs is just a small part of your life; it does not limit how far you can go. You have the right to dream giant dreams. You have the right to go to school and become a leader. You have the right to love, to be loved, and to let your light shine bright. When you work hard, believe in yourself, and keep a kind heart, there is no dream in this wide world that is too big for you.
