Celebrating “Acting Beyond Sight”: A Triumph for Inclusive Arts at UEW

an association dedicated to championing equity, empowerment, and accessibility, the Association of Students with Special Needs (ASSN-UEW) at the University of Education, Winneba, proudly extends its warmest appreciation and congratulations regarding the landmark “Acting Beyond Sight” initiative.

This transformative creative arts intervention represents a monumental milestone in our shared journey toward a truly inclusive academic and cultural community. Spearheaded through the Department of Theatre Arts by Mr. Divine Kyere-Owusu, the initiative brilliantly demonstrates that the realm of performance is boundless, proving that visual impairment is never a barrier to artistic expression, creativity, or stage excellence.

Redefining the Boundaries of Performance

The “Acting Beyond Sight” project successfully engaged 22 students at the Akropong School for the Blind in a comprehensive, practice-oriented training program. Through weeks of immersive sessions, participants explored essential theatrical components—including improvisation, specialized voice training, movement cultivation, and collaborative performance techniques tailored to their unique strengths.

Rather than viewing acting through a strictly visual lens, the initiative reinforced the profound truth that theatrical performance is deeply rooted in imagination, emotion, voice, and lived human experience. The journey culminated in a powerful, original stage production collectively conceived and performed by the students themselves. This inspiring presentation showcased exceptional discipline, resilience, and artistry, challenging traditional stereotypes and redefining what it means to command a stage.

A Milestone Worth Celebrating

For us at ASSN-UEW, this milestone resonates deeply with our core mission. It highlights the undeniable impact of targeted institutional support, innovative research, and an inclusive educational environment. By creating platforms where students with special needs can unlock their creative potential, build unshakeable self-confidence, and share their authentic voices, UEW continues to set a stellar benchmark for inclusive education across the nation.

We applaud the Department of Theatre Arts, the visionary facilitators, and every single student whose courage and brilliance brought this production to life. Initiatives like “Acting Beyond Sight” remind us all that true artistic expression speaks a universal language—one that transcends physical sight and connects us through the power of shared human imagination.

We look forward to seeing more groundbreaking, inclusive milestones that continue to break down barriers and elevate diverse talents across our campuses and beyond!
