Our Greatest Ally on Campus: Everything You Need to Know About UEW’s Visionary Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual

At the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), leadership is measured not merely by administrative authority, but by the transformative impact built through empathy, action, and inclusion. Standing tall at the heart of this legacy is our Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual—a visionary leader, an intellectual powerhouse, and without question, the greatest ally and champion of the Association of Students with Special Needs (ASSN).
Prof. Mitchual’s rise to the pinnacle of university management is grounded in a stellar academic journey marked by relentless dedication and scholarly distinction. A proud alumnus of Ghana's premier academic institutions, his educational background reflects a deep-rooted commitment to technical expertise and pedagogical excellence. He holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Agricultural Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he cultivated his foundational knowledge in science and technology. Driven by a passion for advancement, he pursued a Master of Science (M.Sc.) and subsequently a Ph.D. in Wood Science and Technology, both from KNUST. To complement his research acumen with effective teaching and administrative delivery, he also acquired a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
Over a career spanning more than two decades in higher education, Prof. Mitchual has established himself as a distinguished scholar, researcher, and academic administrator. Prior to assuming the highest executive office at UEW, his professional journey was defined by significant contributions to academic research, curriculum development, senior university administration, and youth mentorship. His vast expertise in wood science, combined with his deep understanding of educational systems, has positioned him as a respected authority across national and international academic circles.
Yet, beyond his formidable credentials and administrative achievements, what truly sets Prof. Mitchual apart is his passionate belief in educational equity. From the moment he took the helm at UEW, he has consistently demonstrated that a university’s greatness lies in its ability to uplift every single student. For members of ASSN, Prof. Mitchual has proven to be an indispensable partner who moves beyond mere rhetoric to deliver real, meaningful impact. He understands that disability is never an inability, and that creating an environment where students with special needs can excel academically, socially, and professionally is a fundamental responsibility of modern leadership.
His partnership with ASSN is defined by proactive engagement, an open-door policy, and an unyielding commitment to removing structural, physical, and technological barriers across our campuses. Under his leadership, student welfare, accessible infrastructure, and inclusive policies have remained central priorities, ensuring that no student is left behind in the pursuit of higher education. His visionary approach continues to foster a campus culture rooted in dignity, mutual respect, and equal opportunities for all.
As the Association of Students with Special Needs, we take immense pride in celebrating Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual. He is more than an administrator; he is a beacon of hope, a dedicated mentor, and our steadfast partner in building a barrier-free future. We honor his past accomplishments, celebrate his ongoing leadership, and look forward to scaling even greater heights together under his inspired guidance.
